It’s Griftmas at the BOAI

BOAI is following PLOS' lead — that didn't work, so fund us to try again!

In 2002-03, the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) and aligned groups from Bethesda and Berlin issued declarations or statements about how technology had enabled the possibility of a scientific information utopia.

Now, 23 years later, BOAI has announced it is shifting to become an organization, stating a main goal in one clear, isolated sentence:

We are seeking additional partners and funding to fully operationalize our activities.

The new organization will be led by Melissa Hagemann, one of the signatories of the original BOAI in 2002. The small Steering Committee includes Peter Suber, someone from EIFL, and someone from SPARC, in addition to an academic from Mexico and one from Canada.
