The Cyberlibertarian Archive

How the Internet Archive went anti-democratic via its cyberlibertarianism

Monday, I wrote about OA’s relationship to cyberlibertarianism, its requisite disdain for copyright, and some of the contradictions the rhetoric of OA (“democratize” in particular) has with its deeper motivations and broader effects. The new book by David Golumbia — Cyberlibertarianism: The Right-Wing Politics of Digital Technology, published posthumously — was the spur for the post.

I wanted to boil down more clearly how ideas associated with OA are anti-democratic, because I think it’s vital to recognize these when they appear.

To do this, let’s visit the Internet Archive (IA).
