What Chore Is AI Solving For?

A CNET journalist tells it like it is for Apple Intelligence and AI in general

Tech journalist Bridget Carey brings some hard truths to the rolling release of Apple Intelligence — both how it’s being positioned and demonstrated via ads, and then more profoundly by asking what task AI is actually here to solve.

Carey began as a business reporter, then started her tech journalist days writing gadget reviews and covering “netiquette” for the Miami Herald. Her column was syndicated nationwide. In 2011, she left for CNET, where is host of the CNET Update.

Her criticisms of the ads in particular ring true — I’ve caught myself musing about what awful people and traits they portray, since in the ads people use Apple Intelligence to lie, cheat, and cut corners.

  • As with scholarly publishing and academia in general, Big Tech seems to be losing touch with reality.

But the biggest question Carey asks is, “With AI, what is the chore we’re trying to solve for?”
